Build A Wireless Data Acquisition Network!

Today with the swift rise of WiFi and Bluetooth technologies, the wireless data acquisition network is becoming more and more a possibility. That is why; you find a number of users are moving towards a wire less system. The data acquisition system block diagram might look all the same as in the case of the wired system. The data would then ensure that the WiFi or Bluetooth is received using an appropriate design. In such cases it is also very easy and comfortable to provide a network since these devices also provide a plug out of its Ethernet port. This will bring the device in to the computer network without any issues. In addition to this, the software programming for capturing the input from such an Ethernet port is pretty easy as well.

You can build your own wireless data acquisition network using the relevant devices for these purposes available over the internet. There are sites that specialize in marketing such devices. Many of them have the capability to design and deliver the wireless data acquisition network depending upon your needs. On many occasions, the entire network is designed over a wireless platform. This is easier to do than the wired ones. Cost wise of course, the wired might be cheaper when you are investing into the equipments. But that is short run one; in the long run, the wireless data acquisition network will become cheaper and more comfortable to use. Chocolate Chip Cookies and What They Are Telling Us

Ok, so admittedly, I am sitting here taking a little breather and eating my 4th, or is it 10th (?) chocolate chip cookie of the day. Its not quite as enjoyable as the first, but I know I will eat it anyway. Oh, you ask, Why is it not as good as the first?? Well, it is because this one cant be rationalized away ?this one is just plain over-the-top, filled with guilt, packed with pain and too much of a good thing.

Well, now that we are all clear on my addiction of choice. Lets look at what the cookies are dying for me to know, and what your indulgences want you to know as well.

We all have out little indulgences in the work place, which take us away from our work for a moment and allow us to mentally take a break. Whether it is the extra 10 minutes we spend chatting with a co-worker about her love life, the couple of extra personal calls we make each day, the extra hour we take for lunch, or maybe its just gossiping about how Mary?is taking an extra hour for her lunch. Any one of these little breathers alone, like that first chocolate chip cookie, can be rationalized away and can even be a little bit of a good thing. They are indulgences that make us feel better in the moment.

We all know that it is ok to indulge once in a while, or what the heck, once a day everyone needs a little breather to pick ourselves up. It is when we have hit our 10th indulgence of the day that we have to take a more serious look at why it is we are driven to indulge.

If we are over indulging in one thing, then we can be sure we are disengaging from something else. Indulgence is the symptom, not the problem. The real problem is that we are disengaging from our work and there is a reason we have made this choice. It is a choice that many more people are making and when professionals disengage from their work we all pay the price. Disengaged workers miss 3.5 more days of work per year than average employees. In addition, a study by Robert Hall International shows that two months of the average workers year is wasted time, costing business a total of $1.5 billion in lost time.

There are many reasons why we disengage; my reason du jour is creative avoidance? If Im eating a cookie, I dont have to write an article. However, more and more frequently we are seeing that workers disengage because they have lost their passion for their work, or worse yet they never felt the passion to begin with.

Passion is lost when we are not working in our gifts and strengths. If you were created to be a teacher and share your love of learning with the world, no matter how hard you try you will never feel passion when you are selling office equipment. Conversely, the born sales person will never feel their passion teaching history to the next generation.

The problem is that even after we have heard what the chocolate chip cookies are trying to tell us, many of us remain stuck in the cycle of indulgence. Yes, you heard your 10th cookie telling you that you dont want to sell any more copiers, but you ignore that little voice because you dont know how to put away the cookies and find your true passion.

In this day and age we have many reasons to believe that we just might have a virus. In the past we only had to make sure our anti-virus software was up-to-date and if by some fluke chance we contracted a virus that was new and undetectable to virus software we needed to contact our anti-virus software makers to let them know and receive their experience and technical aptitude in solving our virus problem.

Now-a-days there is a new kind of problem cropping up, and it's becoming more and more common. Virus hoaxes are a well-known catch phrase and you might have heard of them in the news or read about them somewhere on-line. A virus hoax is most commonly spread in the form of e-mail and is designed to make the receiver of the email to believe that their computer security has been compromised.

Most commonly the email will tell the recipient that their computer is infected with a virus and they must delete "such and such a file". Step-by-step instructions are usually included and if the person reading the email is fooled, a file crucial to their computers operations can be deleted. There are many that will try to play on the fear factor and get you to send them your login information to verify your identity as well.

There are usually very easily spotted warning signs common to all hoax emails that you should know about. The first sign that usually gives the hoax away completely is the request in the email for you to "send this email to everyone you know". No credible source will ask you to send the email to all the people you know. Secondly the email will be trying to sound credible and technical. By saying that their email has been provided by a well-known authority on viruses and providing links to that site, a lot of people will be more likely to believe the email. Check the site that is linked to, if you get a generic homepage for say.. Mcafee or Symantec, you more than likely have a hoax. Generally a well-known corporation will have specific information linked in their warning email.

Another way to make sure you are not being hoaxed is to check the major sites of virus and security to see if the email you received has been indexed as being a hoax. McAfee and Symantec both have pages dedicated to hoaxes. As well there are other sites loaded with info to check out for virus hoaxes.

Most of all it's just a good idea to take a sceptical eye when reading anything you receive on the internet. Just because something has been written down/typed out and hailed as truth, does not mean it is so. Keep your eyes open and your computer virus-free.

Establishing T1 And T3 Connectivity - How Do You Decide From Who?

For T1 and T3 (aka DS3) business connectivity.....how do you decide who offers the best package of bandwidth and network performance for the money?

A T1 (or T3) by any other name or even the same name, may not be the same. There is so much more to it than "just" getting a T1 (or T3).

First, no matter who you buy your T1 from, most likely the actual circuit (loop, UNE, copper, ...) will be provided by the Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier, (ILEC) which is the RBOC, a Baby Bell in most areas (in the US). Might be Pac Bell, now SBC, er... AT&T (can sure get confusing). But any area with any amount of B&I will have a number of Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC), other competitive phone companies. And they are not all the same in their services. They may all offer a T1, but there can be BIG differences.

Look at the contracts offered. A T1 is 1.544M of bandwidth. One contract may state that if you actually use the full bandwidth regularly, they will increase your rate. Another one may state that if the full bandwidth is not available at any time 24x7 you get a rebate. BIG difference. Some will go even further and provide specs on things like packet loss and latency letting you know not only how fast, but how good. Be sure to check SLA's (Service Level Agreements).

Many of the smaller CLECs may have the ability to connect locally to the ILEC and sell you a T1. But how much bandwidth do they own? Some business models allow for a 10 to 1 ratio of sold bandwidth to owned bandwidth. This is guessing that only one out of ten of their users will want to actually use their bandwidth at any time. Others actually have their own "above net" fiber. This way they can haul your traffic above the congestion of the regular Internet to a more local peering point. At the extreme top end of providers, they can guaranty data transfer rates to points around the world.

Dedicated Internet, Voice or WAN availability depends on the exact address of the service location.

For a T3 (aka DS3) connection, this can be very expensive to implement. You might first want to see if the building you're in already has any fiber connectivity going into it. If the buliding is new or was part of the 2000 boom they might have some fiber already in the building. Then all you would need to do is find out who the fiber belongs to and pay to light up the line.

T1 and T3/DS3 are not distance limited, but they can be expensive for rural or hard to reach locations. DSL is limited to 12-18K feet and Ethernet over Copper (EoC) to 9K feet from your service address to the closest DSL or EoC equipped Central Office. Cable Internet and fiber providers must already be in your building to provide service --although, they may extend cable/fiber if there are multiple tenant prospects.

Most T1 and Ethernet over Copper providers buy building access (copper pairs or loops) from the local exchange carrier (LEC). If you have a T1 order in process (with any provider), and are experiencing an extended install delay, chances are that the LEC has facilities issues in the area (not enough copper pairs, fiber, cross-connects, etc.) In this case, you can either wait for the LEC to resolve the issue, or order new service from a provider that doesn't use the LEC access network (e.g., cable, fiber or wireless.)

Throw in the options of MPLS, Fiber, Gigabit Ethernet, and Metro Ethernet....and making a decision can get even more confusing.

However, no matter direction you go in you'll want to do a thorough comparison of all available providers to make sure you get the best combination of bandwidth, cost, SLA, QoS, etc to meet your application requirements.

Whatever that solution is it can be pretty time and effort intensive to contact every potential provider in the area individually.....compare, negotiate, decide, do the paperwork, etc.

Can You Wall Mount the iMac Intel Core 2 Duo? - 17" and 20" iMac Computers that are VESA Compliant

For people who may not be familiar with the term "VESA compliant", VESA stands for "Video Electronics Standards Association". The common definition when referring to LCD and Flat Panel monitors is: "VESA standard" means a hole pattern on the back of the monitor; 75 mm x 75 mm or 100 mm x 100 mm (approx. 3" x 3" and 4" x 4" respectively). The diameter of the screws used to mount displays with VESA mounting is 4 mm. The mount holes on the back of LCD monitors may be centered or located towards the bottom stand. With certain displays you may have to remove the stand or a cover plate before you can access the mount holes. If you are interested in more in-depth information about VESA standards, the VESA.org website also provides summaries of the organization's display mounting standards.

As confirmed by Apple's Support Site: "No VESA Mount Adapter Kit" for the iMac Intel "Core Duo" and iMac G5 "iSight", making these iMac models VESA non-compliant. And, "while similar in form to previous iMac G5 models, these models are not compatible with Apple's iMac G5 VESA Mount Adapter Kit."

The 17-Inch and 20-Inch iMac models from the "White" series iMac Core 2 Duo have the same housing and stand as the original Intel powered iMac Core Duo series, and these models are VESA non-compliant as well. The new 20-Inch "Aluminum" iMac Core 2 Duo models also are not VESA compliant.

The confusion is because Apple at one time did provide an optional VESA adapter kit with similar iMac models. The earlier iMac G5 models that could be made VESA compliant with adapter kits by Apple were: Two models with 20-inch displays -- the iMac G5/1.8 20-Inch and G5/2.0 20-Inch, and three models with 17-inch displays -- the iMac G5/1.6 17-Inch, G5/1.8 17-Inch, and G5/2.0 17-Inch.

With regards to iMac models offered after these pre-iSight models, only the 24" iMac computers have had VESA adapter kits available from Apple. The 17" and 20" iMacs were left having no VESA bracket kit option and more importantly, no easy method for removing the stand. Because of this, and the fact that most people who purchased the 17" and 20" iMac as a "portable" computer, it made sense to develop a VESA adapter kit for the iMac that wouldn't require the stand to be removed or any modification to be made to the iMac computer. This VESA adapter kit provides the best of both worlds to the end user as it allows them the ability to attach their iMac to a VESA mounting system and mount their iMac the way they would like to i.e., above a work surface, wall, kitchen cabinet, etc. And, when they decide to temporarily move their iMac to a different location, or take it with them when they travel, the iMac is ready to go with a few turns of the bolt assembly.

Setup Internet Connection To Digital Video Recorder Behind Router

This is first article from two part series looking at the seemingly easy task of setting up Internet connection to security DVR. While this article will focus on general steps involved in proper connection forwarding to CCTV DVR, the part two is all about dynamic DNS support and workarounds. Before we step into the main subject, I like to explain very briefly a few key aspects of Internet connection for those of us not familiar with term like IP address, DDNS, port forwarding or IP mapping.

Terminology:

Every computer or other network device, in our case CCTV recorder has its own address called IP address, much like your home address it allows the information to find its way in enormous world of internet. IP address has four groups of numbers separated by dots; the number range is between 0 and 255. There are two separate networks that we need to take into consideration, LAN for Local Area Network and WAN for Wide Area Network. LAN has its own IP addresses and handles connection on local network devices (computers or devices located in your home or office network), if WAN IP is your home address than LAN IP would be your apartment number.

WAN IP is an external address visible to every user on the Internet. We will explain rest of the terminology as we go along.

Setup:

The best way to explain and clarify surveillance DVR connection setup is to use an example. In our example, we will setup DVR model VDV-074 from DVRExperts thru Netopia Router/Modem combo currently used by AT&T DSL provider with static IP service, I will also use Linksys WRT54G Router for Cable DSL connection. Security DVR recorder needs to be connected to the Internet through Router and Modem, in some cases Router and Modem are all in one devices, for example Netopia Routers.

For standalone Modems please connect the Internet out to WAN port, on your Router. Connect CCTV DVR and computers to available ports on the Router as well. Your Router will need to be setup now to log in to the Internet service provider and establish connection.

Netopia Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default IP http://192.168.1.254. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Netopia Routers are admin for user and serial number of your Router for the password.

Select Configure followed by Quick start link, type your Internet service providers user name (email address) and your ISP password. Click submit and alert icon located in upper right corner (I know it is strange), finally select save and restart. Your connection should be up in minute or so, click home link to see your connection status.

Linksys Router users:

Open up browser on your computer and type into the address bar your routers default IP http://192.168.1.1. User name and password window should appear; the default user name and password for Linksys routers are admin for user and admin for the password.

The home page of the router has ISP settings, type in your email address as a user name and ISP password for the password, select save or submit. The Router will restart after minute or so, log in again and go to status page to see if your connection status is UP.

If everything is ok and your connection is UP, we can now proceed to fun part of the setup process

There is great number of different security Digital Video Recorders on the market, so please follow your DVR's manual for details; I will only provide the proper settings. In the DVR menu, setup static LAN (Internal) IP for the DVR, in our example we have 3 computers and DVR. Each device has assigned LAN IP address as follows:

Computer 1 - 192.168.1.100

Computer 2 - 192.168.1.101

Computer 3 - 192.168.1.102

DVR - 192.168.1.103

The surveillance DVR will now be accessible within our network by typing its assigned internal IP (192.168.1.103) into browser or connection software. What we need now is to forward the connection from external IP (WAN) which is accessible from outside of our network to the LAN IP of the DVR (192.168.1.103).

Netopia Router users:

Select Configure followed by Advanced and finally IP Maps. IP map table should be empty, click on add and type into IP Map Entry Name text box the name of your DVR connection, in our example I just typed in DVR so I know what this IP map is for. In Internal IP address box type in 192.168.1.103, for external IP address refer to you ISP work sheet and find out what is your IP. In some cases ISP will provide more than one static IP, you can choose one of them.

Click submit and alert icon located in upper right corner, finally select save and restart.

From now on anyone requesting external IP will be forwarded to the internal IP of the DVR (192.168.1.103), therefore the connection should be established successfully.

Linksys Router users:

When setting up your DVR for access from the Internet, you will need to configure Port Forwarding on your Linksys Router. This can be accomplished in one of two ways, Specific Port Forwarding or the DMZ host. The DMZ host automatically forwards all incoming connection requests to a given IP address on your local network. Open the Applications & Gaming section of the router and choose DMZ. DMZ is not secure and should only be used with embedded, non-PC based CCTV recorders.

To expose the DVR to the Internet, enter the DVR local IP address (192.168.1.103) in the DMZ Host IP address box. In some cases you may just want to forward specific ports to your security DVR. If you are running any other device/server that hosts services available to the internet, you will want to use specific port forwarding instead of the DMZ Host, also if your DVR is PC based it is strongly recommended for security reasons, to only forward ports used by DVR connection. Open the applications & Gaming section of the router and choose Port Range Forwarding. Type in the name for the connection, starting port number, ending port number and internal IP of the DVR (192.168.1.103 in our example). Save and exit.

Your connection is now setup properly.

You probably noticed the term static IP in this article, and are wondering what that is.

Well, static IP is what the name suggests an IP that never changes. While there is no problem with internal IP selection; we can use whatever we want or prefer - the external IP, usually is dynamic. The static IP has to be requested from the ISP and is more expensive than dynamic IP. In our case we do want static IP so we have address for CCTV DVR connection that will never change.

Throughout this tutorial I have assumed that the external static IP is available.

Unfortunately in many areas it is not, or the cost is prohibitive. Don't panic yet, there is at least couple of different ways around this problem and I will try to go over each approach in my next article "How to use free dynamic DNS services for DVR connection."

How to Connect an iPod or Other Digital Music Player to Your Car Stereo

I recently "sold out" and bought myself an iPod. Here's a pro's guide to hooking it up to your head unit!

But first...

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past few years, you have heard of the iPod; Apple's wonderfully designed portable music player. The iPod allows you to carry the music of hundreds or thousands of CDs in a small box that fits easily in your pocket or bag. It is capable of much more, but the focus of this article is on the music. Because of the extreme portability of the iPod, many people want to bring it with them in the car. This is a problem because most cars don't offer iPod connectivity, with few exceptions. Fortunately, there are solutions for people who want to use their iPod in the car.

Direct connection:

Pros: Control iPod with stereo and remote controls, automatically charges iPod, perfect sound quality, easy to install, cheap Cons: None that I know of!

This option is only available to owners of radios that support a direct connection to the iPod. Basically, all you need is a cable that connects to your iPod, then to the radio. Alpine is one brand I know that offers this feature. Some new vehicles also offer a direct connection to the iPod.

How to connect via an interface:

Pros: Control iPod with stereo and remote controls, automatically charges iPod, perfect sound quality Cons: Expensive, more complicated to install

This option is available to owners of more up-to-date aftermarket radios and some newer factory radios.

Aftermarket radios:

You'll need a brand specific ipod interface. For example, if you have an Alpine head unit, you'll need to get an Alpine ipod interface. Usually, this interface is a small box that has an output to your radio, and an input that connects to to your ipod. Basically, you'll need to find an appropriate mounting location for the box. From there, find a good place to route the ipod cable. Some good locations are inside the glove box, or if you have a pocket in your dash, route it through there.

Factory radios:

You'll need a vehicle specific ipod interface. The one company I know of that manufactures these interfaces is Peripheral. Check out their website to see if your vehicle is supported. If yes, you're set! Hook up the interface similar to how you would above.

How to connect via a phono to RCA cable.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy installation, super cheap Cons: Can't control ipod with stereo, ipod won't automatically charge

You will need a head unit that has an auxillary input for this to work. If your head unit does not have an aux in, you're probably better off looking for another alternative.

How to connect an iPod through FM modulation:

Pros: Very easy to setup and install, device is widely available, most devices charge the iPod Cons: Not the cheapest, poorer sound quality, ipod can't be controlled by radio

This is the easiest way to hook up an iPod to your radio. Basically, your ipod connects to a device that broadcasts the music to a radio station frequency. Tune your radio to that frequency, and your music will play through the radio. There are a variety of products available that do this.

What a Broadband Phone Really Is

You may have heard the terms broadband phones,internet phones, or even voice over internet protocol, but do you really know what they mean or how they work? With the gaining popularity of these on line communication tools, you should understand exactly what these things really are and how they do what they do.

Broadband phone actually uses voice over internet protocol (VoIP) to carry phone calls through the internet. This is an alternative way to transmit the call to the traditional telephony network. To say it another way, the calls go through the internet instead of traveling through traditional phone lines.

How does it work, though? The VoIP, when you place a broadband phone call, converst your voice into what can be best described as tiny digital packages. These packages are fired over the internet and then changed back to the signals necessary for the receiver to transmit them in language that you understand as the voice on the other end.

To get a broadband phone, you do have some options. A hardware broadband telephone uses an adapter. You connect this hardware to the router on your network or to your PC directly. Another option is software. The broadband software is a program that makes broadband calls.

This technology is being called the future of communications. Such hype is sending communications companies into a frenzy as they race to offer it so as not to get left in the dust as more and more of the public drops traditional phone service for broadband phones. Companies that fail to get in on the broadband call business risk going the way of the dodo. With that in mind, many of the companies are already offering VoIP technology, and every day more are joining in.

The reason the broadbad phone companies are so popular is that they can be done cheaper than traditional phone services. You see, because the calls bypass regulary Telco tolls, the companies using broadband can offer much lower rates. This is particularly true on long distance calls, making them similar to cell phones in that sense. While currently the broadband phone services may not offer quite as much reliability and quality as traditional phone lines, the technology is improving almost constantly and wont be far behind. For the money, though, the internet is already showing itself as the way to go to save on phone service.

If you decide that going with one of the many broadband phone companies is the way you want to go, then you will need to make sure you have a couple of things so that your transition to cheaper phone calls will be smooth. First, you will need to make sure you have a good reliable broadband internet service in your home. You will next need a telephony adapter installed. You will be plugging your home phone into the telephony adapter which will then plug into your cable or DSL modem with a network cable. Since internet connections are reliant on the modem which is powered by electricity, you will lose your phone service if you lose power. One thing you may want to consider, since you wont lose your cables function with an electricity loss, is to get some sort of power source you can plug into the modem in case of a power outage. Get all of that together, call the company of your chose, and you will be using the internet to make your phone calls before you know it.

T1 Internet Connection

T1 carrier is one of the most popular leased line options for digital transmission that offers high speed internet connectivity at 1.544Mbits per second. A T1 line is comprised of 24 individual channels, each capable of transferring data at 64Kbits per second. With T1 Internet connection, you can have uninterrupted and reliable data transfer within seconds. In normal phone lines, voices are transmitted through copper wires as analog signal and you can transmit data at around 30 kilobits per seconds with your normal modem.

A T1 Internet connection, on the other hand, is capable of carrying 24 digitized voice channels at the speed of 1.544 megabits per second. A T1 carrier can carry 192,000 bytes of data per seconds ?nearly sixty times more data than that of a normal residential modem. T1 Internet connection is capable of providing uninterrupted data transmission which you would not get if you use ordinary modems. If you want to transmit audio or visual data through your residential modem or through your phone service you have high risk of getting jammed since the speed is so slow. With a T1 service, you can eliminate this risk significantly.

Internet service by service providers convert all voice calls as analog rather than in digital format, which not only takes longer time but frustrates customers now that high speed is available. With a T1 line, you not only increase the speed of your data transmission, but also save time for your valuable online work. With the advancement of fiber optics, lesser time is required to convert analog signals to digital format. Fiber optical wires are sometimes used for T1 line to provide maximum speed, although the normal wires are by copper. In case of ordinary modem or residential telephone connection, thin copper wire is used which can rarely carry much load at the time of transmission of data. In T1 Internet connection, broadband internet connection is used which ensures two-way transmission of data at a faster rate than any other method of transmission.

Apart from that, hundreds of users can comfortably share T1 connection, which is impossible if you use modems or telephone line or an ISDN line. If you are interested in online songs and movies, then you will find the ordinary modem or residential telephone service can not meet your demands, as these lines take hours to convert any MP3 files or video files to analog format and to transmit them at the desired destination. A DSL or cable may be options but a T1 line, if you can afford it, is the best option. For a business of 20 or more employees, a T1 service is required. By implementing T1 circuit, you can easily transmit digital and video data at the required destination at great speed and at the same time, have a T1 service thats more reliable.

If you have a small business with twenty to twenty five users, T1 Internet connection is most suitable for you. T1 Internet service works better than ordinary business DSL. It is economical to have T1 bandwidth if your business is small in size and internet is critical for your business. A Channel Service Unit (CSU) is used to connect non-data terminal equipment with a T1 Internet connection to get the desired T1 line speed. A CSU is a device which connects a leased line and remains attached to the customers system. The main objective of CSU is to encode data, which comes through a broadband T1 line. For the T1 connections, one needs to have a channel service unit.

T1 circuits work simultaneously with your existing phone wires and equipments, though you may require special jacks and connections and some alteration in the wiring to get T1 connection. It is the responsibility of your network service provider to install new wires and equipments according to the requirements. The connection not only runs through conventional metal wires but also runs through fiber optical wires, twisted pair copper wire, coaxial cable, digital microwave, and also through infrared. T1 Internet connection is used for linking remote LANs. It can also be utilized to bring Centrex service from the telephone companys central office to the business areas cost effectively.

While DSL is a quick and cost effective medium of acquiring high-speed bandwidth, it is usually not intended to support commercial applications or many users at a time. A T1 Internet connection is the ideal solution. Businesses mainly use two types of Internet access ?DSL and T1; and from though DSL is less expensive; it is not as reliable as T1 circuits. For installing T1 service, you need to spend the cost for T1 line price, which would include installation fee, although it is at times waived. Customers have an option to negotiate T1 prices but for this, they need to sign a 2 or 3 year term. Today getting a T1 price is easier than it used to be. In conclusion, to get dedicated high speed internet connectivity you can get a T1 internet service. You can enjoy dedicated, reliable and uninterrupted internet connectivity.

The Internet has changed our life entirely. This new technology has become a major element which influences all that we do at work and at home. We may test our internet speed in the manual way, by calculating the time our computer needs to transfer a file of a known size, but this is the old method.

The new way to determine our internet speed is to access a service that allows us to run a test through their servers by sending our computer an information packet which our computer will send it back to them. In this way the site measures the time our computer needed to download and upload the information packet and informs us the internet speed of our bandwidth.

By this test we measure the actual speed of the Internet and in the same time the real internet speedof our access to the internet. The actual speed limit is the amount of useful data that your internet connection can transmit and receive in a second. On the other side, the real internet speed includes also non-significant information. But when we make the test, only the actual speed is measured, the real internet speed is not important in this calculation.

Now that we know what our internet speed is, let's see what we can do to improve it. The first solution is to install optimization software. If you have a Dial-Up connection and use Windows 98 or Me, click Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. Right click on the Modems icon and from Properties tab choose the General tab. Use the Maximum Speed Drop-Down menu to select 115200. If this setting causes your Modem to no longer connect, change it to 57600. Windows XP users should click Start, Control Panel and switch to classic view. Double-click the Phone and Modem options and choose the Modem tab. Change the maximum settings port speed to 115200 and if the Modem responds badly or not at all, change the speed to 57600.

Broadband users should think of using a tweak utility such as TCP Optimizer. After downloading the software we must run it and make a backup of our current settings. Save the backup, and follow the instructions in the software to optimize our broadband speed. Don't forget to click apply changes and click Yes if the software ask you to re-boot the computer.Now our computer should run faster. If the new settings do not satisfy you, return to the program and restore your back up settings. If you failed to make a backup, restore Windows default settings.

And the last solution would be to change your internet provider with a better and reliable one. We may choose from a large scale of opportunities. There is no reason to waste our time with a lazy internet speed when we can spend our precious time with a high-speed internet connection.

Who are they?

They are mostly Dutch, French, British, Belgians and Germans; they are all over 60 and some pushing 80. They are all from cold climates and just spend the summer at home, the rest of the time, they are here in Spain, and it is 'Baja' (low) season so camping is cheap.

For many, the 10?day it costs to stay here is cheaper than staying at home with the heating on. Sometimes it is just the cost of living that makes it an attractive deal. In my circumstance this is definitely true.

If I buy two beers at the bar, it makes a saving equal to the camping fee. Enough said.

802.11g - The Hardware

'My Campsite' has a room in what used to be the old reception with two PCs and a 802.11g wireless router, the signal stretches as far as the bar, so at most times of the day there are also lots of people with laptops dotted about. The 'power user' Dutch are fully equipped with Bluetooth headsets too. The laptops tend to be top of the range widescreen machines with the Dutch and more modest models with everyone else. The Dutch are not frightened of spending lots of euros if they are getting something for free!! The connection is a free with a 128 bit WEP key printed on the base of the router.

Keeping in touch

Most of the people here are parents, grandparents or even great grandparents. They have a large family network that they feel the need to email on a weekly basis. They take photos which they upload to Flickr and I even know a few who upload videos to Youtube.

I'm trying to educate some of these oldies to set up a blog so that they can earn some money whilst enjoying their retirement.

There are also a surprisingly large number of people who spend hours online, communicating with their friends, just to find out how to make their computer work properly.

Problems they encounter

I can see the range of the wireless networks getting larger. Already I have heard of a campsite in Almeria, where each pitch has an available wireless network.

I am guessing that that if this becomes the case, then TV via the internet will become the norm rather than satellite systems. As laptops get more portable and phones get more complex, the devices people use will be carried around with them all the time. At the moment there is a habit at about 9pm of wandering off to the computer room with a laptop in one hand and a Skype headset in the other.

Broadband Booster Can Improve VoIP Quality

Although cable broadband internet is a whole lot faster than dialup, I usually experience a slight delay when opening a webpage. Perhaps most people don't notice the latency associated with cable internet, but as a former DSL user it got my attention right away. I noticed a distinct difference in speed between cable and DSL, but I realized I had to live with it in order to use internet phone service in the most economical way. DSL requires a phone line, which requires telephone service - so if you want to replace your land line phone with low cost internet phone service, the only option is to use cable or T-1 for internet. With my internet phone up and running over cable broadband, the voice quality was better than expected. I noticed no big difference between VoIP and my land line phone, but did experience "dropped" calls and "incomplete" calls periodically. This is due to the latency in my broadband connection, but since VoIP saves me over $500 a year (unlimited calling for less than $20 a month) an occasional dropped call is fine with me!

While flipping through a computer magazine, I spotted an ad for the Hawking Broadband Booster. This device is designed to eliminate the "lag" in your internet connection by monitoring the data that is coming and going and re-prioritizing the packets. It installs between your cable modem and router, and acts like a "traffic cop", eliminating congestion by ensuring that both router and modem get nice even streams of data. In an attempt to decrease the latency with my cable modem, I decided to try out this device. Although it is a bit pricy ($70 - $100), I figured I could always return it if it didn't work as claimed.

The broadband booster was really easy to install (just connect two cables and restart your cable modem) and required no configuration whatsoever. The device is tiny (2" X 4") and weighs only an ounce or so. I noticed an immediate improvement in my internet connection, although there is still a very slight lag. In the past several weeks I have logged nearly 3000 minutes on my VoIP service and have not experienced any dropped or incomplete calls. I am very satisfied with the Hawking Broadband Booster (HBB1), and recommend it to anyone using broadband and/or internet phone service. Although I am not a gamer, the company claims it really helps with online playing as well. Many people with satellite internet cannot use VoIP due to the inconsistent satellite signal. If satellite internet is your only choice for broadband, it may be worth your while to give this little device a try.

Let me go on record by saying that I neither condone nor condemn either of these methods. I am only acknowledging that they exist. I don't want this to turn into a moral debate. There are marketers who use both these tactics. Both can be used successfully. The key is understanding them both and the consequences of their use.

Let's take good cop first because that's the easy one to use. Good cop is where you approach your prospects with a nice friendly email, sympathizing with their situation and offering your help. You speak to them like you're their best friend. The approach is non confrontational. It would be very difficult to put anyone off with this type of approach.

The problem with it is that it's also very lackluster. Prospects have turned a deaf ear to this feel good approach for the most part because the majority of marketers use it. The message received by the prospect is one that has been done to death. Therefore, it becomes very difficult to convert the prospect into a buyer unless you are very convincing or can show an awful lot of social proof.

The bad cop approach is when you pretty much tell your prospect that if they don't get your product, they're going to end up on the street with a monkey and a tin cup begging for spare change. The Rich Jerk, as you might recall, used this approach. He had quite a mouth on him. It worked for him. But it won't work for everybody. For one thing, you need to know your target market. The Rich Jerk knew his. He tailored his message to this market and it translated into millions of dollars in sales.

Ultimately, you have to decide which approach you want to use. They both can work. As long as you understand the pluses and minuses of each, you'll be fine.

Of course, you can always try to find somewhere in between the two.
